  4. amplifies the low
  5. 12 volts from the
  6. battery to a high
  7. enough voltage to
  8. cause a spark in
  9. the gap of a spark
  10. plug to start the
  11. engine.  Composed
  12. of two coils wound
  13. inside an oil
  14. sealed casing, the
  15. ignition coil has
  16. primary and
  17. secondary high
  18. voltage terminals
  19. on the coil cap. 
  20. The battery,
  21. through the
  22. ignition switch, is
  23. routed directly to
  24. the coil, where the
  25. voltage
  26. amplification
  27. occurs.  Water can
  28. seriously damage an
  29. ignition coil, and
  30. must never be
  31. unsealed.
